Whenever the weather changes my hair and scalp automatically go into damage mode and starts breaking and becoming dry. How can I avoid it happening this time?
The main reason why we find themselves battling breakage and dryness when the weather changes, is cold dry air can causes the cuticle layer of the hair strand to lift. As a result, moisture does not stay locked into the hair shaft. Also hot weather and humid climates can also dry the hair out and increase the risk of breakage. Your hair care regime needs to be adapted season to season. During the colder months It is essential that you add another layer of moisture to your hair by using a leave in conditioner. Leave in conditioners will not weigh down your hair, they are designed to penetrate the hair strand, which helps keep the hair conditioned and moisturised from the inside out. Deep conditioning is the best way to keep your hair hydrated and nourished throughout the summer.
I have my hair done at the salon. Do you know any cheap alternatives / quick fixes to softening my water?
Hard water refers to the concentration of certain substances like calcium and magnesium in your water. Hard water on the hair is damaging because it can strip the hair of its natural lubricating oils and contribute to the ageing of the hair cuticle. It can also negatively affect the colour of your hair, causing it to fade.
Try adding vinegar to the water you wash your hair with this will help to neutralise the calcium in the water.
Try using bottled water to wash your hair, and invest in a good clarifying shampoo.
Invest in a good shower head water softener this will help to remove some of the calcium and magnesium in the water.
It broke my heart when my 10 year old daughter told me her natural hair is ugly. As a mother who relaxes, what can I do to instil confidence and change her mindset?
Setting an example.
Remember a mother is a young girls first role model, you will have a major influence in her life choices. Make sure to you stay positive around her and always tell her that is beautiful and that her hair is beautiful.
If you externalize negativity in any way around children, your child will begin to absorb that energy. Remember to always speak positively around them, they are watching and listening to our every word you say.
Invest in reading books with characters with curly hair.
Allow your daughter to participate in her wash day. Be very creative with styles, It will also teach her how to take care of her natural hair properly.
